Summer House

Before

This old out building which used to be part of a dairy needed planning permission for some of the changes that were implemented before it could be transformed into a garden store and summer house.  As much of the original building as possible was used to keep the amount of waste down and cause the smallest ecological foot print for the improvement.

After

The breeze block walls and flooring of the building were kept as was one of the stable doors but an internal wall was moved and the asbestos roof replaced to enable a double pitched roof with slate tiles. New window openings were made and fitted with oak double glassed windows and two sky lights were put into the roof of the store so enough light filters into the room to enable tender plants to be overwintered and some seedlings grown.

The outside of the building was covered with wooden cladding to hide the breeze blocks and to tie the building in with the main house which is a converted barn. The small vegetable garden in front of it was also improved at the same time. Three small beds were turned into larger raised beds with wooden posts with act as supports for a net during the soft fruiting season.

A green oak decking was built along the non garden side of the building which required strict planning regulations as the river is part of an SSSI. The trouble taken was well worth it as now the client is able to sit out directly on the river bank which previously was too steep and narrow to enjoy.
